Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana      I critically listened to this song three times. I have always loved this song! My dad would always play this song and other songs by Nirvana. I feel like this song is a mix of alternative/indie but also very punk rock. My favorite part is the beginning of the song where the guitar plays a little solo riff and then the bass drums kick in! SO cool! This riff is continued throughout the whole song. This song alternates between brute force and gentleness. I love the vocals in this song. The lead singer has a raspy voice and I especially love when he belts in the chorus. The background vocals make the song sound great too. The electric guitar carries the melody through most of the song. The lyrics of this song don't have a special meaning. One of the band members girlfriends wore Teen Spirit deodorant. That's how they got the song title but I guess this song discusses their relationship with drugs like heroin. I like how the guitar has a...

LADY by Kenny Rogers     I critically listened to this song three times. I really enjoy listening to Kenny Roger's voice. It has a raspy, yet strong sound to it. I like the riff in the beginning with the piano and some string instrument that sounds like a harp maybe. This riff is played throughout the whole song.  I like how the verses are a minor sound but the chorus picks up the major chords. One of my favorite parts is the strings and orchestra in the chorus! I also like when the beat picks up in the chorus and Rogers starts belting. The form of this song is AABA. The lyrics of this song are sentimental, it is a love song. The song was written by Lionel Richie, and the lyrics talk about how this lady's love is the only love he needs. Talking about how she brings him up when he is down and how she brings him hope and aspiration. "You're the love of my life, you're my lady." Very cute worded song. This song is under the country genre, but it doesn't tot...

I Wanna Be Sedated by The Ramones          I critically listened to this song three times. This is a fun song with a good beat. The style/genre of this song Alternative/Indie Rock. It's more like a punk rock. This song includes the electric guitar, bass, and drum. It follows a good four-beat but there are some examples of syncopation in the melody, where the notes are played off-beat. My favorite part of this song is the vocals! The lead singer, Joey Ramone has a cool sound to his voice. I also enjoy the part where there is a guitar solo at second 55. It creates a cool emphasis on the pause of the vocals. My other favorite part is where they start singing "Ba ba ba ba" at minute 2:00 to begin ending the song into a fade. The riff in this song includes the electric guitar and is repeated throughout the whole song. This song is form AABA. This song was written when the Ramones were in the UK during Christmas and everything was shut down so they had nothing ...

HERE YOU COME AGAIN by Dolly Parton     I critically listened to this song three times. I really enjoyed listening to this song! Dolly Parton has a very powerful, yet soothing voice. "Here You Come Again" was Parton's crossover hit from country music to pop. It topped the country charts and reached #3 on the pop charts. This song includes the piano and the bass. As well as a steel guitar because Dolly wanted to keep the country sound still somehow. I enjoyed the riff in the beginning of the song with the piano and guitar that repeats itself throughout the whole song. This song has an AABA form with a bridge, a solo from the guitar and orchestra. My favorite part of the song is the key change at minute 1:43. It sounds so good! This song keeps a steady tempo throughout the song, not a whole lot of syncopation. The lyrics of this song seem to be about a creepy ex boyfriend of Parton's that won't leave her alone. But her delivery of the song turns it into an anthem ...

A Change Is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke     I critically listened to "A Change Is Gonna Come" three times. This really is a beautiful song. The genre of this song is R&B and Soul. Sam Cooke has a very calming yet powerful sound to his voice, probably because of his background as a gospel singer. This song was inspired by Bob Dylan's "Blown in the Wind." This song was released after Cooke's death in 1964. This song includes violin, cello, bass, and some wind instruments. My favorite part of the song is the beginning when the string instruments do a little riff solo then the cello joins in. It is beautiful and Cooke's voice when he sings "I was born by the river," is amazing. I also really love the french horn at minute 1:22, where it does a call and response with Cooke's voice. These lyrics are also very meaningful. It consists of Cooke's personal expression of his experiences with racial struggles and the civil rights movements. This ...

Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles     I critically listened to "Eleanor Rigby" three times. I honestly really enjoyed this song! The Beatles have such a fun and unique style. The introduction of the song starts off with loud vocals and intense strings. You would think the song started in the middle. This song shifts from major and minor chords sounds throughout the whole song. Instruments in this song contain violins and cello. My favorite part of this song is the violin...particularly, minute 1:08 to 1:25. The violin has a cool melody solo and then all the vocals join in on the chorus. This song demonstrates call and response, with one singer for the verses and then several voices joining in on the chorus. I also noticed there was examples of syncopation in this song. The lyrics talk about loneliness from a philosophical perspective. The lyrics have a progressing story line verses with repeated choruses but nothing happens in the characters' lives. This song is a folk balla...

"CHARLIE BROWN" by The Coasters     I critically listened to this song 3 times. I love the beginning of the song when they sing "Fee- Fi-Fo-Fum" with only the drums. My favorite part is the melody that the saxophone plays. I also enjoy listening to the part when there is a solo of "Why is everybody always picking on me," it is acapella so it brings emphasis on that part!  I noticed that this song is call and response with the vocals and the tenor saxophone. This song is an AABA form and the A sections are 12 Bar Blues. This is a happy, upbeat song and makes you want to dance! This song genre is the style of Rhythm and Blues. The lyrics are kind of silly. It talks about how Charlie Brown is a clown, who smokes in the auditorium, writes on the walls, goofs off in the halls, and throws spit balls. The music matches the lyrics though, its a fun, care-free song. I think this song is trying to target the teenagers because it's a funny song. I noticed some ...
