Week 12 Listening Blog Post
Smells Like Teen Spirit
by Nirvana
I critically listened to this song three times. I have always loved this song! My dad would always play this song and other songs by Nirvana. I feel like this song is a mix of alternative/indie but also very punk rock. My favorite part is the beginning of the song where the guitar plays a little solo riff and then the bass drums kick in! SO cool! This riff is continued throughout the whole song. This song alternates between brute force and gentleness. I love the vocals in this song. The lead singer has a raspy voice and I especially love when he belts in the chorus. The background vocals make the song sound great too. The electric guitar carries the melody through most of the song. The lyrics of this song don't have a special meaning. One of the band members girlfriends wore Teen Spirit deodorant. That's how they got the song title but I guess this song discusses their relationship with drugs like heroin. I like how the guitar has a little sting solo before the verses start. The form of this song is AABA. I would recommend this song to anyone who enjoys rock and wants to jam out!
Hi Ally! I completely agree with everything you said. I absolutely love the blend of the guitar and Kurt Cobain's voice, it's really a timeless sound to me. I also really liked how you talked about the song switching from forceful to more gentle, I had never really thought of it like that. I also had no idea about how the song got its name, so that's a fun fact I now know. Awesome job :)
ReplyDeleteYour comments and insights on this song is so great and cool! I agree with you that the beginning of the song with the guitar riff is awesome and I really like the raspy voice that the lead singer has. All the instruments and vocals work so well together. This is such a good song to jam out to for sure.
